Berat Island Project Proposition

Project Vision

The proposal transforms Berat’s river island into a public park and cultural forum. A new pedestrian axis bridges both banks of the Osum, stitching the historic quarters with the emerging civic park. Two circular pavilions mark the center as flexible venues for exhibitions, markets and performances.

Site & Strategy

Axial pedestrian bridge binds castle, city and island into a walkable sequence.

Clear flood terraces step the landscape to accept seasonal inundation safely.

Low-impact structures on piles minimize excavation and protect the riparian zone.

Ring pavilions serve as all-weather meeting rooms overlooking the water.

Civic Promenade

Linear walkway with shaded colonnade connecting to existing river paths and plazas.

Two Ring Pavilions

Light timber/steel structures hosting exhibitions, workshops and community events.

River Commons

Graded lawns and steps for informal seating, markets and festivals facing the water.

Service Kiosks

Small utilities, restrooms and storage embedded along the axis for easy operations.

Landscape & Ecology

Planting uses native riparian species tolerant to seasonal floods. Permeable paths, bioswales and restored river edges improve water quality and habitat. Lighting is low-glare and dark-sky friendly to protect night fauna while ensuring safe access.

Phasing

Phase 3: Fit-out, wayfinding, and programming with local cultural partners.

Phase 1: Axial bridge, flood-safe paths and temporary event lawn.

Phase 2: Construction of ring pavilions and utilities; planting of groves.
